I've been living in my apartment since 2009. I wouldn't live anywhere else. HOWEVER I know most of you live in a house. I realize houses are maybe better but if you've ever lived in an apartment, what were the positives? Is there anything you liked about apartment living? Should it be only for a short time? What are the downsides of living in a house?
Any thoughts you could offer on this subject would be great.
My parents owned a house. When I started working, lived in apartments, then bought a house until 2019 when I bought the apartment where I now live, in an other town, to be nearer to relatives. -The downsides of living in a house ? The whole maintenance is your responsability (But the same if in a co-ownership) -If there's a garden,a burden when aging ! The downsides of a flat? - Noise ; Cleanliness .
I’ve always wondered about the the word apartment. I’ve always called them flats and thought apartment was a posh word but am I wrong? I lived in a flat in London, a very long time ago. Another lifetime ago! Do you have a balcony Miss CC? That’s the thing I missed. Can’t think of any downsides to living in a house personally.
I have lived in an apartment years ago when I was working in London, but as LLCC says, I've always called them flats.
Apartment living must be very convenient if you're renting as you don't have the maintenance and a balcony is lovely which you can put some plants out on - I've seen so many pictures of people making the most of their balconies and growing veg on them
Renting a house must be ok, but owning a house and maintaining it to a good standard is an ongoing expense and the garden another job entirely. I was talking to my brother the other day about ownership vs renting, he rents in a private complex, a very unusual quirky ground floor apartment, one landlord owns about 20 of them. He was saying how lucky I am to own my own place but my point was that, it costs a fortune to run and maintain, he has none of that so can save his money to pass onto his son, our money goes on so many expenses and if we don't keep up with the maintenance our kids will inherit a pile of rubbish. We have house ins. contents ins. Life ins, council tax etc etc, things he doesn't.
Also when I get old and possibly have to move into residential care, I'll have to sell my house to pay for my care! He won't have to do that
Is it Denmark or Holland were most people rent and it's unusual to buy?
I'm desperately trying to think which program I was watching when I saw some incredible state owned apartments with amazing tiered balconies, obviously not UK.. I'll see if I can find it and come back to this post.
There is a lot to be said for being part of a group, and the support and friendship that is gained from this.
Writing of apartments - I gave my apartment a thorough clean today:
1. Washed a load of laundry 2. Cleaned my kitchen 3. Did some basic cleaning in the bathroom 4. Wiped down surfaces with anti-bacterial wipes in my lounge 5. Changed my table cloths and cleaned my lounge tables 6. Hoovered my apartment 7. Keep on top of the washing up 8. Took out the recycling 9. Am airing out my apartment
It takes work to keep an apartment clean & tidy. But I don't have hot water ATM so I couldn't fully clean my bathroom today.

I lived in an apartment for most of my 20's was so fun, but paying for rent just felt like dead money as I didnt own it. I also ended up doing botox training course and aesthetics training so it then just became impractical as i needed more space/a room to do this in. living in a flat is also hard to bring up a family there. I just think a home is better for a family and if you have pets etc

You've made a very good point: and one I've considered. I can't have a family living in this apartment: it simply is not big enough. If I wanted a relationship I would have to move out and live in a house. But doing so feels sad. Still, things change and I won't be here forever.
