The people next door!
For the past 4 months I have been searching the Internet for ideas on how to stop noise from party walls and noise coming into my courtyard garden from neighbors who insist on opening their window every evening which is in the boundary wall looking straight into my garden. from above (they have a flat above a beauty salon. In the daytime I get continual talking from the business and in the evening continual chatter from the garden area.
Thing is, they are not noisy as such, it's that the party walls are thin as paper and the courtyard garden is acting like an echo chamber because of the shape of the walls, it's like normal speech has been put up against a microphone and amplified.
From my dining room in the day I can hear people in the business go to the loo and I mean "on the loo", every word of conversation as if they were in my house etc and from the courtyard I can even hear the stirring of a cup of tea like it's coming through a loud speaker, so when they have a conversation it's as if they are sitting next to me. It's no ones fault it's the construction of the building and after taking a look at all the horror stories on the Internet concerning people with really bad neighbors I consider myself lucky.
Putting up soundbloc wall panels is going to cost a fortune, an expense we didn't imagine having so we are building bookcases for all the alcoves affected instead. The book cases will be made to measure and before being slotted into place will have carpet underlay glued to the backs for extra sound blocking.
The other party wall down our enormous hall has been paneled with 5mm mdf board, this has been really effective, we couldn't afford to lose much space in this area, we now have to paper it with extra thick lining paper, we will probably then give it a coat of acoustic paint to be on the safe side.
As we wait for the bookcases to be made (OH) I have found classic FM really effective at masking the constant loud chatter from the business (when they have the dryers on they shout over top of them) Because there's not much bass in classical music it doesn't boom boom and annoy neighbors but it overrides all the talking.
For the garden we are having a large canopy made but not until the summer. Until then we have found that putting natures sounds outside in that area, downloaded from youtube masks the sound of next door when they open the window and start chatting, brown noise works well too.
There are some new gadgets coming onto the market called Muzo which blocks sounds and another called qloud which plugs into your wall sockets, which I can't wait for.
I'm lucky, I don't have the neighbors from hell, just a badly thought out building. Please add anymore tips to this thread if you have any, as some people have awful neighbors and could do with some help.
