I lost my dad recently and I’m in the process of selling his home. We lost my mum 5 years ago and my dad never really changed anything in the house. My mum loved her ornaments and China plates on the wall. There’s their wedding china both an old fashioned dinner service with tureens and about 3 sets of tea services. There’s tons of crystal glasses and every bit of wall space is covered with china plates, pictures or hanging ornaments. The trouble is I’ve already got a dinner service and 2 tea sets that were my grans and all the crystal glasses are tiny and no use to me. I managed to get rid of her royal Doulton dolls and her set of Dickens figures and a whole load of China birds and her Hummel ornaments to relatives in Scotland. There’s still so much stuff. There’s about 20 photo albums all lovingly labelled from their holidays but I already have a ton of photos of them.
I’ve brought all the family photos home with me from off the walls and apart from a few things I’ve got all I want and that’s more than I can cope with already.
My son and his wife are furnishing a house soon so they will take some of the furniture but after that I’m going to have to get a house clearance in. I feel so guilty. My mum loved all this stuff and it was all so carefully collected and displayed. I don’t think it was cheap either. I’ve looked on eBay and asked around but nobody wants this kind of stuff anymore and I’d only be struggling to find a place to store it till it’s my time and my sons would then throw it all away.
I still feel awful about just chucking it though. Help
