Has anyone been to La Rochelle by any chance ? We are off to our friends daughters wedding celebrations the end of this month, but spending a few days beforehand holidaying so to speak.
we have booked two nights at Saint Emilion before the celebrations in Bordeaux but have two nights spare and so was thinking of driving to La Rochelle ? All we are looking for is beautiful scenery and good food as well as historical interest.
Waooh ! St Emilion, Bordeaux .... Well, La Rochelle would be a perfect supplement to your trip. I spent a fortnight's holiday there ( quite a long time ago, but the center of the city can't have changed much) and really loved it, landscape, architecture, atmosphere ...) But don't wait if you want to book a room , it'll already be "full season". I remember we stayed at Ibis Hôtel, perfectly located in the old city. Hope you'll be able to manage it !
Been on our bucket list for a few years as my father-in-law had a friend who lived there and we once contemplated taking him for a visit. It looks beautiful.
Have booked to stay in Maison des Ambassadeurs which appears to be in the old part of the city. Busy researching places to go and eating seems to play a very big part. Saint Nicholas Quarter near Vieux Port is the place to go for restaurants galore and food markets. I love a french markets
Have been using the website The Good Life France to read up on La Rochelle and Saint Emillion. I always feel it makes your time easier if you have researched a little beforehand and get to see a few of the key points, particularly if you are only staying for a short time.
Have the best time SD, you are so ready for your trip!
We had a wine tasting at a grand cru chateau in St Emilion some years ago, the following day we stopped off in La Rochelle, but spent most of the time in the aquarium, as that day our daughter got to choose the activity , the port is beautiful, we did manage to have a lovely meal there.
