...or just another monumental waste of time, effort and tax payer's hard earned money?
It is expected to take 3 years for the witnesses to complete giving evidence, and is expected to cost in the region of £ 156 million, it has already cost over £ 56 million.
The UK’s political and administrative leaders have had to hand over all their official and unofficial communications and then appear at the inquiry, to be publicly questioned in an inquisitorial process. They have largely complied with the process (not that they had much choice) barring a few efforts to try to exclude certain embarrassing whatsapp messages.
I saw a fair bit of Boris's interrogation, it was almost as if he was on trial, although he seemed to handle himself well, he gave a competent account of himself, there was none of the hyperbole and buffoonery he normally uses to blag his way through. At times he appeared strained and emotional, and came across as sincere.
There seems to be a lot of focus from leading counsel on the infighting and expletive ridden texts and whatsapp messages rather than the success or failure of policy . There was a fairly ridiculous part though during which Boris was asked to explain why over 5000 of his whatsapp messages between key personnel went missing during the period between Feb and June 2020. His explanation was that he had 'backed the phone up and returned to original settings' ( although he also admitted he had no idea what that meant), and as a result the messages had been lost.
I think now though, the tech guys have managed to recover the lost messages.
It is definitely true though that Boris was faced with having to make impossible decisions during covid, there were enormous social, health and economic considerations which had to be balanced in unprecedented circumstances. During his term as PM, he 'got Brexit done', in a fashion, got us through covid and then the Ukraine/Russia situation blew up, no wonder he never had time to comb his hair .
The Uk are the only country holding such an inquiry, Sweden is conducting a modest inquiry of sorts, on a small scale, France and Italy are engaged in criminal investigations into certain aspects of each country’s Covid response, although criminal investigations of politicians are much more commonplace in these countries than here and often lead nowhere.
There is still talk of Boris making a comeback, and not only that, but Farage is apparently also looking to make a comeback, Bojo, Farage, Trump the unholy triumvirate....nearly as scary as Covid!
