I have forgotten when it started to rain, but it's definitely a few days ago and boy is it raining !!!!!
There are so many roads and lanes by us closed, cars on the side with steaming engines and people pumping out water from their drives The lawns are like sponges, fine until you walk on them and the water comes oozing to the top
We had a lot of flooding around this area too, not in our immediate locality but surrounding villages and towns. A friend who was visiting me for a quick cuppa, had to come back to me after leaving once as she couldn't get back to her house - we had a sleepover! Children were trapped in schools and the roads were chaos.
Now I expect sink holes to start appearing over the country!
We have a river running through but the banks didn't burst. Someone else said its mostly to do with neglect of the drainage systems and gulleys and so many new homes being built due to more population but without adequate drainage.
There is a lot to be said for being part of a group, and the support and friendship that is gained from this.
I think we got off lightly over here, we still had plenty of rain though and my back roof which is over the kitchen diner and conservatory couldn’t cope and there are damp patches around the doors and some on the ceiling too, even found it’s way a bit further to the living room I had some dripping water in there, thankfully not too much, and also got into my outside lights and the power went off until I sussed out the problem.
Lucky for your friend B, that you could help her out, I can’t begin to imagine how hard it would be to have a flooded home.
Friday we had monumental rain - by the early evening there was no way out of town. Even the little back roads had become impassable. The brook at the bottom of my garden which is normally all but a trickle, was a raging torrent about 4 feet deep. Most of the valley is still full, and there is more rain to come, but the roads are better now and all main routes open. The worrying thing is, we had just one day of steady rain - and this is what happened. The drains and gulleys never get cleared out by the councils now (lack of cash apparently, yet the top brass are on extortionate salaries), and the rivers desperately need dredging, but that won't happen as NRW forbid it. So where do we go from here? More homes and livelihoods ruined, and yet they carry on building. We have several more windfarms in the planning stages, yet each one has an enormous concrete pad, so more land lost that would ordinarily soak up moisture scary times we are living in
What about this latest wind surge that is happening on Thursday/Friday ? Gales of up to 80-90 miles per hour ? Is anyone in the line of fire so to speak ?
Dreading it SD - there are several very large oak trees behind my house. With the ground so sodden, I worry the roots will loosen, and as they are still in full leaf they worry me greatly. We could do without more rain, as rivers full and fields absolutely soaking already. Here's hoping everyone stays safe...
