Not sure if I've put this in the right section, but what a dreadful thing for someone to do! (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12574219/Could-Sycamore-Gap-Tree-come-life.html)
I just can't imagine why they'd chop it down in the middle of the night unless they wanted notoriety or it was out of spite for some bizarre reason .... I didn't even know it existed but it's saddening to know that 300 years of existence and it was felled one stormy September night not by the wind, but by a person with a chainsaw and ill intent.
I was driving the car when I heard about this on the radio and nearly jolted the vehicle in my shock !! I purposely didn't watch the news for the next few days as it saddened me so much.
LLCC and myself and our OH's went walking the wall one weekend many moons ago and had our photo taken under that lovely tree.
All on the basis of first seeing it in the film Robin Hood with Kevin Costner.
Oh, I was just ready to open a thread about, but saw jax already had ! Headlines in Newspapers and online here too - everybody is shocked, and angry. Very strange coincidence (but I think there are no such things), on a French Forum I attend, we were just talking of the importance of trees and not felling them without a really good reason when the news broke ! A member of our Forum - Britton, and a sort of wizard, said "They will have to pay for this crime" ( and I think she meant more than just a fine !)
A 60 year old was arrested and apparently had been evicted from his home on the day it happened. I have to say I shed a tear for that tree having been there and knowing how beautiful it was and so old yet so healthy.
