The perfect programme for vintage lovers is about to start today, The Vintage French Farmhouse, BBC1 at 4.30 - 5.15 each day, Monday to Friday, for the next FOUR weeks……………the dealers head to South West France, the place to find effortless sophistication, to buy a vintage bargain and search for antiques, curios and collectibles that they think will appeal to the British market.
I will enjoy watching that Jazzy, vide greniers ( empty attics) happen most weekends in all the french towns and villages, basically a big car boot sale but with many beautiful and interesting items, we made some beautiful purchases during our time there.
There is an antique, vintage fair in a very pretty village called Howden in Yorkshire at the beginning of October. It also has interior decor stands with many french decor items on display. I have put a link below.
Sure, I'd love to watch it. But I'm afraid they can't possibly find any valuable piece at a bargain price : it's one of the most "touristic" regions of France, and it has attracted lovers of vintage buildings (many "old farms" and even hamlets belong to well off people from the UK or the Netherland) ..., pieces of furniture, crockery, lace and so on for a very long time. But it's worth watchin, the landscapes ...and listening to English spoken with a French south-westener accent !
I’ll try and watch it. Sounds interesting Jazzy. Hold old do things have to be to be vintage?
I don’t know LLCC, but I watched yesterday’s shenanigans and thought what a load of old codswallop, honestly, the dealers paid the most ridiculous prices for a load of tatt, I know each to their own and all that, but I could have done a far better job, I realise that they can only buy small things as they are selling them and posting them once sold, (maybe I am incorrect here and they may bring large purchases back for collection) I’m thinking those canny French sellers must mark their goods up to sell to us Brits, but if they hear a French person put the price down to something realistic.
There is a huge interest over here for French vintage and antiques, and lots of Brocantes pop up over here throughout the Summer, and I see lots of instagram posts about trips to France to buy stuff, I will keep watching because I like some of the dealers, having seen them on the Bidding Room programme, but I think I will be more interested in the scenery than the actual buying, plus I like a bit of afternoon laughter 🤭
I do, things were made properly, had quality. Have nostalgia which I can feel. I have a lot of nostalgia books, eg past and present of my home town etc.
I think 'vintage' are items 40 to 50 years old not 100% certain, but there or thereabouts.
I enjoyed the programme but thought the whole buying/negotiating parts were a bit tame. I also thought the items purchased ( apart from the ladies two items) were a bit obscure. Which leads me to think the whole posting and selling online within 24 hrs bit was fixed.
Do the 'profits' go to a charity
The area it is being filmed in though is stunning, and I absolutely love that farmhouse, if ever us girls need a place for a WTF forum convention, this farmhouse has to be it .....I'm not volunteering to do any cooking as we would all starve, but I can do a mean margarita
I’ve enjoyed it more as the week has gone on, probably because they are buying larger items, and I also like Jo Roberts and Ian Humphries, they chat and enjoy friendly banter, I agree with you though Cj, it seems fixed at times, so far I haven’t heard charity mentioned, it all seems a nice little jolly for all concerned, I like Nigel Havers commentary, his cheeky thoughts are sometimes exactly what I am thinking too 🙄
Ok, that’s a great idea for a WTF convention Cj, you fix the cocktails and I’ll fix the food 😂………………that might have to be takeaways if the single French farmer is still popping in to make sure we are ok 😉
Jazzy, did you see the episode where the lady bought the 70s 'brutalist' little stool?
As she was cleaning the stool, she was using mayonnaise to get rid of some of the marks, she said the combination of the oil and the lemon juice would get rid of marks made on wood as a result of placing a hot cup on the table, say.
I have a very pretty antique walnut ladies desk which does have such a mark on it, made me meself , so I got the Hellmans out and a soft cloth, and rubbed and rubbed and rubbed....nowt. Been trying it for a few days now, the marks not budged and the hallway smells like a fish and chip shop.
Every time I look at that desk now I smell mayonnaise
Yes Cj, I saw that one, that’s a bit odd that you can’t get the mayo to do the trick 😬
No one seems to be buying anything that you couldn’t buy over here at a brocante type sale, I hope it livens up, I assume it makes for easy watching, which we are all supposedly enjoying since lockdown?
