Until last week, could have sworn : "orange". But I happened to come across pale cream coloured haddock and cheddar cheese, in two different stores, and discovered that the orange hue was due to an artificial colouring. As "safe" food is my 1rst choice, just as well. Have you noticed a similar change in the UK ?
Shaliby, the yellow haddock is readily available here. We can get the paler version, but it's usually from a fresh fish supplier. I didn't know that cheddar cheese had a colour added. I don't think that it's widely known. The cheese that I have at the minute is Yorkshire cheddar, it's a pale cream colour and lovely and mature.

Thanks for your answer, Tricha. The cheddar cheese I bought is labelled " Caledonian Cheese Company". "Mature" 12 months - and very tasty ! The average orange colour is due to adding "rocou" (F) ="annatto", derived from the seed of a Mexican or Brazilian tree - widely used as a colouring agent - natural and doesn't seem harmful. I have also noticed that smoked salmon is paler than it used to be. And I also came across a Cheddar cheese blue -veined with Roquefort- rather disappointing, much too salty as Roquefort usually is.
Was the ‘orange’ cheese Red Leicester Shaliby ? it’s my favourite cheese, coloured with Annato, it’s crumbly, moist, mild and delicious 😋 we also have a blue veined cheese called Stilton, another favourite 🤩
Jazzy : really, couldn't say- I've been using for years cheese labelled "cheddar", orange, and it's the 1rst time I find it "non coloured". Yes, I know about "Stilton" cheese. Here, we have a really wide range of "blue veined" cheese, the main difference being "cow" or "sheep "milk.
Can't say I've ever had a red cheddar, I would have said Red leicester, was the only red one I know. I love Double Gloucester, it has a lovely creamy flavour.
I thought smoked haddock was always orange, to tell the difference from the unsmoked, which is pale, so am I wrong? We'ver had it in both colours as long as eggs are eggs, so not a recent change.
There is a lot to be said for being part of a group, and the support and friendship that is gained from this.
I’m going to try Double Gloucester, I don’t think I have ever eaten it yet, thanks B 😋
You've never eaten Double Gloucester Jazzy?? Double Gloucester ?? Too mild for me. I do like Red Cheshire Cheese which is a peach colour ! very tasty.
I don't know why we call it Red Cheddar/Cheshire Shaliby as it has always been orange. I have the Caledonian cheese, but always opt for the cream or white as they call it. How confusing are our colours ?
Smoked haddock in the supermakets is predominantly golden yellow, but I'm the only one who likes it in the family, hence we don't eat it.
You've never eaten Double Gloucester Jazzy?? Double Gloucester ??
Yes, well I have now Sunny, and I prefer it to Red Leicester, all down to you B, thank you 😊
Well you've learnt something this week Jazzy about your preference to cheese. Perhaps if your school had put a cheese subject in the curriculum, you may have attended more often
