We were given one a few years ago by my ES which also has a screen (very small) that you can watch films etc., cookery programmes, glean recipes.
I use it for all sorts, but mainly as a radio and a timer for cooking.
Came down this morning and did my usual 'Alexa put on Classic FM' She replied in this husky whispering voice.....quite loudly in a way because of the volume button "Classic FM for yooouuu" well it freaked me out !!! as she's never done that before. So I asked her
"Alexa, why did you whisper ?"
" Beacause I am on whisper mode, you can switch it off if you don't want it"
Well I never knew it was there is the first place.
I might add, whilst I am writing this on here, I do have a tendency to talk out loud if no one is at home and because I am mentioning her name, she is prattaling on at a tremendous rate
Yes I do, I never use her, I had to get it because I needed a new doorbell and she tells me when there’s something moving near the front door, then the doorbell rings or sometimes if it’s windy and the trees are moving she says ‘motion detected at the front door’, (motion is a weird word, I sometimes think if I looked outside would there be a whoopsie) on a very windy day it’s really annoying and I turn the volume down.
Recently B mentioned using her Alexa for ‘coffee shop music’ and I am going to try that.
Well. I always said I would NEVER get one of those!! Yet last week I did. It's good for listening to the radio as I have her in the kitchen. And I know you will think I am loopy (and you could be right), but its another voice in the house. I wish her good morning and she tells me some nugget of information about the day. She also wishes me 'nighty night' too. I turn off the microphone when I have visitors so she's not 'listening'. Main reason I got her was if I had a fall, and didn't have my phone with me I could shout to her to ring for help. Not being negative but as I get older I am more aware of what could happen if I took a tumble (cos I'm clumsy!) She is also handy when I have a memory block about something.

I have a few Alexas. I have one in my room (can't sleep with OH because of his illness) You can change the voice on it. The Alexa is my room has a male voice, lovely accent, I'm a sucker for a well spoken man. But like you SD, I had the fright of my life..it must have been gone midnight, I asked Alexa what the time was.. now remember it was dark, I was in bed and the house was quiet, well, he whispered to me and I don't know why but it sounded like the sound wasn't filling the room, just in my ear. I know it sounds daft, but it was the creepiest thing to have happened to me, my heart was racing and I truly felt quite scared. It felt like I had an intruder in the room
It is not set to whisper mode, so I assumed it was maybe because it was gone midnight, like it automatically changed, I really dont know, but I don't talk to "him " after midnight anymore.
Apart from that I have many uses for it, I ask it about recipes, how long I have to cook something for, how to spell something, to turn the lights on or off, I have unlimited music so can ask for anything, I can ask it to tell me a story even, a joke or play a game. Turn on OHs electric blanket and talk to someone else with it who also has an Alexa, so a hands free Alexa speaker conversation. Its connected also to the blink doorbell, it played sleigh bells at Christmas everytime someone knocked at the door, it will also converse in Spanish with me... the list is endless and I really enjoy having it.. apart from the freaky whisper thing
There is a lot to be said for being part of a group, and the support and friendship that is gained from this.
She wakes me up in the morning, she plays my favourite radio stations or music, she even plays soothing music to relax my dog, she turns on and off the lamps in my home, she tells me when i have a parcel coming from Amazon, and occasionally she scares the living s**t out of me when she speaks to me unexpectedly
I'll tell you something really annoying though.... If I say George is home, she says "How lovely, aren't you a lucky girl to have such an amazing husband
My OH realised you can get her to say a certain sentence in reply to a statement. I can't figure how to change it, or Id have a completely different response!.
You can also change Alexas voice to famous people, not just male or female
VW said about having another voice in the house and you can literally chat to this, so totally get what she means

I’m laughing out loud! Good old Alexa! We have one but she lives in Florida and I’ve not spoken to her since 2023 before the hurricane hit. However, I have Siri on my Apple Watch/iphone. He keeps butting in when I’m not even talking to him. He did it today. Asked me if I wanted to call a certain number. It wasn’t even a proper phone number. I told him off. Bring back Alexa, I’m thinking.

Now thats spooky cos last time as I was going up to bed I heard her voice, but when I asked her what she said, she said - nothing to repeat!! It freaked me out a little I must say lol
